Bird Opticians is an independent, friendly, professional company that has been located on Surrey Street for over 25 years. John Bird first qualified in 1963 and became the youngest branch manager for Theodore Hamblin at the age of 22. By the time he was 27 he had moved on to be a director of Hallamshire Opticians and a director at D&A Opticians by his mid thirties; finally opening up his own business in 1983.
Mr Bird has since built up his practise to include a full time and a part time qualified Optometrist (ophthalmic optician); three full time qualified dispensing opticians, all of whom are registered with the general optical council; two full time receptionists, one part time optical advisor and two part time optical assistants, not to mention our Saturday girl. One of the newest members of staff is Mr Bird’s daughter who works on reception. All our staff, including the receptionists, are fully trained in performing Humphrey Field Testing.
We have a reputation for finding your must have pair of glasses, that really suit you and that everybody notices. Our staff does not work on commission or have any targets to meet and so we pride ourselves on finding the right product for you and your budget. We are official stockist for Oakley and exclusive brands such as Tom Davies, Tag Heuer, William Morris and many more. As an independent stockist we have a number of brands, such as the Prodesign Range that are not available to the large chains.
Liz Clapham is retiring at the end of March 2010. We are pleased to announce that Simon Mann is joining us to provide a contact lens service to our customers. Appointments will be available one day a week on a Thursday from 1st April 2010; with further days to be added in the future. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any queries.
The Internet
Ask yourself do you get value for money…our answer is no. The price tag is cheaper but there may be a lack of service/after care including;
- no qualified person to take your measurements,
- no qualified person to advise you on choosing the right type of lenses out of the many different types available to suit your needs and budget,
- no qualified person to fit your glasses to your individual face shape,
- no-one to come to for adjustments to the fit,
- no-one to come to for minor repairs,
- no-one to come to while adjusting to new lenses or prescription (varifocals are not for everyone, we have a monthly guarantee/trial period in case they are not for you.),
- no guarantee you are getting the genuine article
With Bird’s we include these services into the price of our glasses, so you can come visit the shop as often as you like to achieve the perfect fit.
