Optician V Internet

The internet has undoubtedly changed the way opticians do business, with more and more people choosing to purchase their glasses, sunglasses and contact lenses online. People are often attracted by the cheaper prices and home delivery options offered by the internet but they can miss out on important extras offered by opticians’ practices.  What can seem like a great deal could end up costing you more money,  or worse in the long run.

We do see the value of the internet to people buying glasses but here are a few things to consider before buying online:

  • You won’t benefit from a qualified dispensing optician taking your measurements, which could mean your glasses don’t fit properly, meaning you don’t get the full benefit of your new glasses.

  •  There will probably be no one available to discuss your requirements, there are a great number of lense types and coatings available and it is important you choose the right ones for your lifestyle and budget.

  •  Sometimes people can experience difficulties when adjusting to new lenses or frames. When purchasing on the internet there is usually no one to turn to, to discuss alternatives, but with an optician’s practice there will always be someone available to offer expert advice.

  • It is unlikely that an online retailer will offer an adjustment, or repair service outside basic warranty, but with an optician’s practice these are often included in the price of your initial purchase, so you can be confident your aftercare is in good hands.

  • With the ease of selling on the internet, there can’t always be a guarantee that you are receiving the genuine article, but all optician’s practices offer fully traceable products and a transparent service.

This isn’t to say that the internet should always be avoided, but for a full eye care service we always recommend visiting a registered optician.
